Daniel Paul – Something About You (Alex Barck’s Based On Misunderstandings edit)

Cabinet Records – CAB29

This one was released almost a year ago already, but that’s no reason for not bringing it to the show here. Alex Barck from Jazzanova has managed an excellent edit that elevates everything that the original already does. The cutting leads and jelly basslines are pure ear heaven.

My Favorite Robot – MFR 016

Inspired by David Bowie’s song by the same name, the standout track on this EP is the remix by Toby Tobias. Add another beautiful 14-minute epic to your collection of tracks that allow for a bio-break from the DJ booth.

Master H ft Alice Orpheus – Out Of This Life Take 1 EP (Komplex De Deep). Reminiscent of Henrik Schwarz, this one features a jazzy violin and a vocal that wants to keep up.

Stax / Motorcitysoul / Fred P – Finale Sessions 01 (Finale Sessions). A value pack with tracks from three producers.

Sasse / James Flavour – The Right Way (Moodmusic). Old skool vibes and reverberations from Tony Lionni on the remix.

Conforce – Black Stroke EP (Modelisme). Planet E, this was supposed to be you releasing that. Also features a cool italo-detroit remix by Kink & Neville Watson.

Toby Tobias – Macasu EP (Late Night Audio). Lots of chanting. However, Motor City Drum Ensemble turns down the afro and up the deep.

Mixtape for Get Fucked 5th birthday

14 July 2010 | By marek in DJ mix | No Comments Yet

It’s been a while since we’ve update the page. To breathe some life into it, I’ll put up a mix that I finished last week. The occasion? Get Fucked, the event. Like I said before:

Google that and you most probably will NOT find out that actually there’s a cool club night by that name happening in Tallinn.

The mix is not so much “get fucked”, but more like “get slowly made love to”. At least it starts off that way. But you be the judge of that.

Ben Watt – Guinea Pig (remixes by DJ Koze, M.A.N.D.Y. & Smallboy)

15 May 2009 | By marek in 12" reviews | No Comments Yet

Buzzin’ Fly – 043BUZZD

I never really noticed the “Guinea Pig” single by Ben Watt back in 2008. So now when I started writing about the remixes, I felt obliged to do my homework and give the original a listen. Have to say, I did my best, but barely noticed it even now. It’s not really the biggest record Ben Watt has ever made. So, the man of the moment, DJ Koze, has been called up to turn it around. And he does.

With a pepebradock-esque ease, DJ Koze turns up the “Weirdify”-button on his gear. The result is a track that is a breakdown from beginning to end, never easing up on the suspense. Hardly having a beat, Koze’s production focuses on the vocals and transforms the somewhat plastic-sounding original to an organic and breathing piece of music. It’s certainly something for the more discerning DJs there to play, but I bet if you drop it at the right moment, you will see some heads exploding from pleasure.

Oh yeah, there’s also a M.A.N.D.Y. remix. That’s more true to the original, if you know what I mean.

Abicah Soul – Makossa

27 March 2009 | By marek in 12" reviews | No Comments Yet

Abicah Soul – ASR-0029

Abicah Soul (apparently a one-man-show by DJ Stax) first came around with a self-titled EP on Wha? Roots at the time when the afro-latin sound was just becoming popular in house. The record nailed it with all the tracks on the EP. And it makes me glad to see that the Abicah Soul sound has made it to 2009 while many of his compatriots have lost their battle against you-know-what-I-mean.

His sound for me is reminiscent of Osunlade, also in the way that he’s able to fluently incorporate the techy/analogue sounds to his overwhelmingly percussive tracks. This one, “Makossa” (originally recorded by the legendary Manu Dibango, of course) is doing promotional rounds and the vinyl release is supposed to be due in May 2009. With the Culoe De Song release forthcoming on Innervisions, I’m wondering if we are seeing a little afro-house revival here…

Carl Craig to remix Etienne Jaumet

20 March 2009 | By marek in General | Comments Off

Via Versatile blog: Etienne Jaumet’s album “Night Music” will get a remix/re-interpretation by Carl Craig. It’s supposed to see release in September this year and will include 5 tracks, including a track of 22 minutes’ duration.

Both guys being regulars on this blog, this is definitely intriguing news. As for the 22 minute track, it sure sounds like a hangover from the “ReComposed” installment, a collaboration with Moritz von Oswald (of Maurizio fame) reworking the most famous works of 20th century classical composers Ravel and Mussorgsky.

“Get Fucked”?

11 March 2009 | By marek in DJ mix, General | Comments Off

Google that and you most probably will NOT find out that actually there’s a cool club night by that name happening in Tallinn. It will take place this Friday at Club Angel, and the main guest this time is Giles Smith of Secretsundaze fame. Also, P Julm (known as a Ruler Of The Deep) will do his best to keep up. Your humble hosts on this blog will provide for warm-up and cool-down.

It’s Alive!

The fact that we haven’t been posting much recently doesn’t mean that we are not listening to new music. I already previously mentioned an experiment with Tumblr, now we have attached a Delicious bookmark feed on the right of the page. It points (mostly) to Juno releases where you can do the easy job of listening after we have done the hard job of selecting.

God knows what’s next – Twitter? (Sigh…)

Here are some of our recent faves:

Radio Silence

So we’re actually trying out another format of doing this. If you read Estonian, you can check the experiment out here: fijiama.tumblr.com Basically, we’re thinking “shorter, but more frequent”, without cutting back on the priceless literary value of the posts. Your feedback is welcome.

For now, I’ll leave you with a little gem from James Teej called “I’m Human Now”.
